Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is the most common treatment for myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism. The procedure involves reshaping of the cornea (front surface) of the eye so that the light entering the eye focuses directly on the retina without prescription glasses.

Understanding the LASIK procedure

The procedure is divided into three steps

1. A thin circular flap on cornea is created using a microkeratome that is a surgical mechanical tool or a femtosecond laser. The flap is opened by folding back to expose the underlying cornea called the stroma.

2. The stroma is treated with a highly specialized laser called excimer to reshape the cornea by removing microscopic amounts of tissues (ablate) from it. The laser uses an ultraviolet light beam to ablatetissues and reshape the cornea for improved vision.

3. Finally, the created corneal flap is placed to its original position without stitches.

Before LASIK

Your surgeon would perform a detailed eye exam to make sure you don’t have the risk of problems like dry eyes after the surgery. A detailed point-by-point map of your cornea would be created using corneal topographer. Also, the surgeon might suggest wavelength analysis of the cornea to get the best results.

During LASIK

Numbing eyedrops are administered to prepare the eye for operation. The eye is placed under the laser by keeping the eyelids opened with the help of an instrument called lid speculum. A suction ring would also be placed in the front of the eye to prevent movement of eye or loss of contact.

The corneal flap would be created and excimer laser adjusted for your prescription using a computer. You will be asked to focus on a target so that the surgeon can watch your cornea while the laser treats the cornea.

It would be a painless operation but you could feel some pressure on the eye. Also, you could hear some clicking sound coming from the laser beam. The laser treatment takes around 1 minute and the complete procedure takes no more than 15 minutes.

You may feel a little discomfort like burning or itching sensation post-surgery but it would be temporary effect and subside on its own. You surgeon would allow you to leave post LASIK surgery in Delhi after a brief eye exam. Vision would improve immediately but will take a couple of days in stabilizing. The vision improvement could be 20/20 or better.
